Cooking with the Children
Our weekly planned cookery sessions with the pre-school group, The Brook, are extremely polular with the children!
Called The Brook Cooks, the children have the opportunity to read recipes, measure, stir, shake and bake their way through a wide variety of foods. Every week, The Brook make a dish that their friends at Nursery can enjoy. Even better, the children always take a sample home so that parents can have a try too (if the children are willing to share, that is!)
We are passionate about food and devoted to helping the children to experience a wide range of tastes, flavours and textures. Giving the children the opportunity to cooks assists them with important literacy and numeracy skills, helps them to learn how to support each other by working as a team to create something and also - perhaps most importantly - encourages them to try things they might not otherwise. In our experience, when a child makes, a child tries.
The children also grow their own food in our Vegetable Patch, make their own compost in our Wormery and tend to the plants in our own Herb Garden..
Our Brook Cooks have made:
- Tomato and Cucumber Salsa
- Red Pepper Tapenade
- Cinnamon and Raisin Buns
- Ice cream
- Harissa Paste
- Braided Bread Rolls
- Cheesy Scones
- Snickerdoodle Cookies
The best part is when we send home our delicious treats! Recipes are always available for those dishes that our families and children particularly enjoy.
